SMALL DETAILS. USEFUL CHECKS.

Image resolution checker

Read an image’s pixel dimensions and calculate effective resolution at your intended print width.

01 / YOUR DETAILS

A little clarity starts here.

Enter your details, then run the check.

How this works

Effective PPI equals pixel width divided by print width in inches. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. The selected image is decoded on your device; no image is uploaded.

Scope, attribution and licensing

NIST SI Units – Length; exact inch definition. HandInCheck independently computes PPI. NIST non-SRD reference facts; no copied dataset or prose

Adapted from PLOS One Figure Guidelines, reviewed 2026-10-04, CC BY 4.0. No endorsement. Recheck the current journal page. CC BY 4.0 for published content unless otherwise indicated; numeric subset and original paraphrase

Worked example

PLOS One lists 2,250 pixels at 7.5 inches (19.05 cm) as a 300 ppi full-width figure example. Enter 2250 px and 190.5 mm to reproduce 300 ppi.

Limitations

PPI does not establish visual quality. Resampling cannot restore missing detail. PNG/JPEG/WebP only, up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels. TIFF/EPS, embedded figures and vector resolution are not parsed. PLOS rules are not universal.
